For those who haven’t read it, ‘The Long Tail’, by Wired editor Chris Anderson, is an amazing book discussing the changes the internet has made to economics both big and small (or Micro and Macro, if you want to get technical.)
The basic gist: People have traditionally assumed that mainstream products are what people want, but the reality is that everyone has their own niche tastes. In the past, the tyranny of distance meant that stores could only ever carry items that appealed to the lowest common denominator, not peoples diverse, noble tastes.
The internet, and sites like Mintd, allow millions of items to be offered for sale at very low cost to a global market, and as a result, niche markets represent not only the fastest growing market sectors, but the future of retail.
So take heed Mintazens, the worm (and his long tail) have turned firmly in your favour!
The book is a great read for any Mintd Sellers out there who may be in the process of writing up a business plan, and is also floating around as an MP3, which makes for good background listening.
