We here at Mintd HQ have noticed a funny thing about the kind of products that have been selling, and its directly related to the quality of the product photo. Could this be a coincedence? We think not. More than people realise, its how inviting, professional and interesting the product photo is that makes people click on the product in the first place and turns the clicks into purchases.

A short list of what seems to work: h4. 1. Simple

If the frame is cluttered by too much complexity, a quick glance won’t reveal what’s for sale h4. 2. In Action

If the product is used or worn, its a good idea to show it in action, on someone. Humans are incredibly sensitive to faces. h4. 3.Expressive

A good photo should represent the tone and style of the product its of. If your work is delicate and lyrical, then subtle and understated might be the way to go. If its bold and brash, then lots of colour and movement might be the ticket.

Please feel free to suggest more, and good luck shooting!

Red Panda had some great tips which didn’t fit in the comments section:

I definitely agree! Photos mean everything! My tips:

1. Making a lightbox was a huge step forward for my business. Here’s a link to a cheap and very effective one:

A ton of people swear by natural lighting, but I like the control my light box gives me.

2. If you’re taking a close up shot, make sure you’re in macro mode. I’ve seen a lot of people who don’t do this and it’s a wonderful detail improver!

3. Learn your photo editing software. Nothing will get you further than knowing how to correctly fix your pictures. Color correction is big. Of course monitors vary, but you want something that’s representing your product as accurately as possible.

4. Make it fun! Everyone’s got their own unique style. It’s showcased in your products, but also how you display your products. I like close up shots of mine, on a bright white or bold colored background. Others prefer things hanging over rocks or twigs, or being worn in creative photo shoots. There are lots of different things to try, so be yourself and you’ll eventually find your niche.

That’s all I’ve got! :)
